The Dr. Jane Norman Child Study Center offers a play-based
program for children ages 2 to 5 years. The center is also inclusive and,
therefore, encourages and supports the integration of children with a
variety of special needs. Institute students are welcome and encouraged
to observe, as well as participate, in the program. The program curriculum
is based on the emergent curriculum model. This requires the teachers
to closely observe the children, as well as interact with them,
to determine individual areas of interest. Planning is then
based on those interests. The emergent approach is a collaborative approach
that empowers children and therefore fosters a positive self-esteem. It
is very responsive to children's interests, needs and abilities. It allows
unhurried time for children to fully explore particular avenues of interest.
As well, it encourages children to be independent and divergent thinkers.
The Dr. Jane Norman Child Study Centre provides:
~a play based day care program with a
variety of activities (music, art, story time, science, movement, free
play)
~an inclusive environment which welcomes
children with special needs
~a training experience for the Institute's
Early Childhood Education and Special Education diploma students and other
students in the community
